Wickham Trolly No. 6648 is an example of a type of vehicle used by the engineering teams who worked on maintaining the track. These vehicles were produced to assist with inspection of the track and to also transport members of the permanent way teams to where they were needed.
Our Trolley, No. 6648, was built by Wickhams of Ware to the Type 27A Mark III design in 1953. This was part of order No. 48139 which consisted of 16 of the same trolleys for all over the western region of British Railways. The vehicle was dispatched from the Wickham works in Ware on the 22nd May 1953 and was delivered to the depot at Exeter St David's in Devon.
The trolley spent all its life in the western region before moving to the Avon Valley Railway in 1978. It has since been refurbished/maintained at the railway and only used on the odd occasion.
