23724 was originally outshopped from Thomas Smith & Sons as a steam crane, much like our own 24080. It was eventually purchased by the National Coal Board and due to a tired boiler, the decision was made to change the boiler for a air compressor and diesel generator. This allowed the steam cylinders and mechanical design to remain unchanged, but improved its ability to start in a shorter amount of time.

The railway purchased the vehicle in September 1999 and quickly pressed it into use to assist with laying the platform at Oldland Common. The vehicle played a big part in laying the extension of track to Avon riverside before it was eventually taken out of use needing an overhaul when the diesel Hydraulic crane 34571 was purchased.

Due to the unusual set-up with the air compressor, the crane made a very unique sound. This sound gained the vehicle the unflattering nickname of "Puff'n'Fart" by those who used it.
