Introduced in 1953 by British Railways, the 14 ton lowmac EK of diagram 2/244 was built unusually to a previous Great Eastern railway design, of these lightweight wagons. BR built 52, originally built as unfitted wagons they spent most of their working life as departmental wagons carrying machinery across the railway network.
By 1960, most of the Lowmac EK fleet had been scrapped however a few survived (including 905051) and were transferred to the British Railway Electrification program (1980) where they were fitted with through vacuum and air brake pipes. Several Lowmac EK's were permanently fitted with excavators and generators to the wooden decks so that they could aid with the then British Railways electrification project.
Unusually for a lowmac wagon, the EK's had upside down angled plates welded over the buffer stocks, so that when a rake of them were coupled together excavators and other mobile plant could be driven from one end of the consist of wagons to the other.
As of 2022 only three Lowmac EK's survive, making them a rare sight on heritage railways.
Our Lowmac was originally purchased from BR by the London Midland Society, and was brought to Bitton as part of their collection. The wagon was transferred to the AVRHT on the 4th April 2007 and became part of the AVRHT home fleet.
