This vehicle is believed to now be a unique survivor of a small fleet of wagons built by BR to have low sides and a high weight carrying capability. Our wagon’s history is currently not well known, with the trail starting in 1992 when it was owned by the Ministry of Defence. The wagon was built in 1954 by BR as part of lot no.2446. At some point it was transferred into the ownership of the MoD, from whom it was purchased by a volunteer in the 1990’s. The vehicle was numbered LG7 whilst at Long Marston, but didn’t carry any other markings to show what the vehicles number was in it’s previous BR days.

When purchased by a volunteer, the Pig Iron was initially sent for shot blasting and priming at the same time as our Box Van 49883. Once it arrived at Bitton, our volunteers installed a vacuum through pipe, painted it into a BR livery and gave the vehicle a fictitious BR number of B744084. This number was in fact taken off of an Old Trix Trains Model of this vehicle type by the signwriter! The vehicle has since been donated to the AVRHT and in the early 2020’s is having a second overhaul by the Wagon team.
