No. 292701 is a four wheeled single bolster wagon built by the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) in 1947 at Shildon and was one of the last design that the LNER produced of these 13t capacity wagons. The wagons were equipped with pivoting bolster which allowed overhanging loads to be carried between two such wagons. The pivoting bolster was particularly important when traversing sharp curves.
Despite there being no requirement for such wagons, BR continued to make approximately 8500 more to the successful design, with many being converted to ‘close-coupled’ pairs without buffers and conventional drawhook between the two. No. 292701 was purchased from BR Westbury where it had been used as a runner for a GW hand crane. Since arriving at Bitton, the wagon’s internal frame and decking has been replaced.
