4058 was built by BR Swindon in March 1957 to Diagram 93 in Lot 30149. It was initially allocated to the Eastern region, and therefor would've been numbered E4058. 4058 is an 'open' carriage which means that it has four seats around a table, rather than compartments. It has 64 seats in total, arranged around 16 tables.
In June 1965 the carriage was transferred from the Eastern Region of BR to the Southern Region, working trains out of Waterloo and down to the south coast of England. In January 1967 the coach visited the Horwich carriage works to have air braking and electric train heating. In 1969 the Southern region organised a series of bogie swaps between vehicles to provide a better ride for some air braked stock. During this swap program, 4058 had its bogies swapped for common wealth bogies in July 1969, which meant its maximum permitted speed could be increased to 100mph.

4058 was initially kept as a "spare" vehicle to be used as and when needed, but in July 1967 was allocated to set 66 for a year before joining set 28 from May 1969 for 6 years. Being returned to the general pool of coaches in May 1975. During its time on the Southern Region in the South West division it was put in the "Air-braked, electric train heated Common Wealth Bogie" group, which meant it regularly worked the boat trains to Southampton or Weymouth.

In late 1987, 4058 was moved away from the Southern Region and move up to northern England. Being spotted in Carlisle Upperby Depot in 1987, 1988 and 1989. At this point, it is unknown if 4058 had been withdrawn form service or not, but in 1989 it was chosen to be reinstated.

On the 15th July 1989, 4058 was reinstated into traffic at Derby Etches Park Depot. It was reinstated to become a training coach for the introduction of the Class 90 electric locomotives alongside our coaches 3749 & 3991. At this point it was given a new departmental number of TDB977629, but the actual conversion never occurred. It was again withdrawn in October 1990, and then purchased by a AVR member in 1991.

Initially 4058 was moved to the Long Marston storage facility in Warwickshire, before being selected for overhaul to use in the railways planned dining trains. On the 18th April 2006, 4058 was transported by road to Bitton where restoration could commence. The vacuum brakes and steam heating systems were reinstated, along with a full restoration both inside and out. All the seating was re-upholstered in authentic BR pattern blue/green moquette and the internal panelling was refurbished to appear as it would've originally. The coach was finished in the Pullman colours of Chocolate & Cream and named 'Angela' after the volunteer who undertook the majority of the upholstery work to the carriage during restoration.
The carriage sees regular use on our normal running days and is also used occasionally for dining trains.
